What is the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society?
The Ottawa Chapter of Canadian Hemochromatosis Society is a not for profit organization which aims to bring awareness of this hereditary, genetic condition.
Hereditary hemochromatosis (HHC), or iron overload, is an inherited disorder that causes the body to absorb two to three times the normal amount of iron. Over the years, the excess iron builds up in the vital organs, joints and tissues where it can cause a number of debilitating and potentially fatal conditions such as liver and heart disease, diabetes, impotence and arthritis.
How Does the Ottawa Chapter of Canadian Hemochromatosis Society help people achieve a greater level of health or wellness?
Through awareness seminars, publications, and parliamentary attendances in the speakers lounge we bring Hemochromatosis information to the public and to health services.
Tell us a little more about Hemochromatosis
Hemochromatosis is often misdiagnosed or the diagnosis comes too late for some patients. Once a diagnosis is confirmed the patient will start phlebotomy treatment. Blood is often drawn in a hospital haematology unit, and can also be drawn at the Canadian Blood Services. The blood can then be donated if all CBS criteria is met. This is an cost effective method of treatment, and could be of value in the blood bank.
