By Bill Thurlow of Heavenly Honey
As a family business in operation for almost 30 years, we know the value of diligence and effort. Thankfully so do our bees. The busy bees who work for Heavenly Honey enable us to market a wide selection of products from the bee hives including bees wax, pollen, candles and of course fresh unpasteurized honey.
THE MAKING OF HONEY
Honey, in use for thousands of years, is much more than a sweetener. This organic, golden elixir is a mineral_filled antioxidant, brimming with vitamins and enzymes.
Because honey has already been digested by the bees, it is absorbed easily into the human body, providing a quick energy boost.
A healthy food choice, honey has long been known to contain beneficial medicinal properties as well.
Hippocrates, known as the father of scientific medicine, prescribed honey for the treatment of colds, coughs, rheumatism, wounds, bites of all kinds and for many other ailments.
Honey is contained in several modern_day cough remedies and is said to aid in digestion. Raw honey, which contains an antibacterial agent similar to penicillin, can also be useful in the treatment of open cuts and sores.
A word of caution, despite its amazing healthful properties, raw honey is not suitable for children under the age of one year.
BUCKWHEAT HONEY
Buckwheat honey is a dark strong flavoured honey, which has been described as the “Guiness” of Honey. Research conducted at Yale Medical Centre 3 years ago proved that BuckWheat honey was 50 % better than cough syrup with Benylin at curing croup, coughs, and sore throats. Furthermore, it is the most nutritious honey in the world.
BEESWAX
Honeybees manufacture beeswax from wax glands at the sides of their body and make honey cells from it in which they store their honey. The color of beeswax can vary from white to yellow or brown. Bees consume eight pounds of honey for each pound of wax made by the colony.
Beeswax has a mulititude of uses other than in the manufacture of candles. It is used in cosmetics, polishes, waxes, encaustic painting, batik and painting of ukranian Easter eggs.
Beeswax candles burn 2 to 2 and ½ times longer than a normal candle the same size and burn hotter. They are non – toxic, non – carcinogenic, non – allergenic, do not drip and clean the air. This occurs because beeswax emits negative ions when burned that attaches to positively charged particles such as dust, and odors.
BEE POLLEN AND PROPOLIS
Bee Pollen is the seed of a flower blossom which the bee gathers as a source of protein for the young bees. It is one of the richest and purest natural foods and the nutritional and medicinal values have been known for centuries.
Bee pollen is known as a superfood because it contains all the nutrients needed for life. It has been known to help speed up the healing process and assist in protecting our cells from free radical damage.
Bee pollen can be successful in aiding the relief of hayfever and allergies. Propolis (bee glue) is a dark sticky resinous substance collected by bees principally from tree bark. It is mixed with salivary secretions and wax flakes.
Propolis protects bees against disease and reinforces the hive by filling in cracks and crevices. Propolis is high in flavonoids ( a super class of antioxidant) The high nutrient and antiseptic properties of propolis help build resistance to disease.
Propolis has been found to help reduce pain, inflammation and fever, speed cell growth, control free radicals and promote healing.
In summary all the products from the hive are beneficial, healthy, and nutritious.
At Heavenly Honey we work with organizations such as Beauchamp Chiropractic to provide these products and information on the best combination of bee hive products in a healing capacity.
